Tax Heterogeneity and Trading Volume around the Ex-dividend Day: Estonian Evidence
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper examines the trading pattern around the ex-dividend day in the Estonian stock market between 2000 and 2006. An analysis of the Estonian income tax law confirmed that despite its simplicity there exists differential treatment of capital gains and dividends as well as tax heterogeneity among investors. An empirical analysis of the trading data showed a statistically significant abnormal trading volume around the ex-dividend day. By putting these two aspects together and investigating short-term changes in ownership structure around the ex-dividend day it can be concluded that in the Estonian stock market investors use dynamic tax-induced trading strategies around the ex-dividend day. The occurrence of the learning effect and avoidance of transaction costs were also revealed by an analysis of these transactions. 1 Lecturer in Corporate Finance and Investments, School of Economics and Business Administration, University of Tartu. Working Paper Alfred P. Sloan School of Management Trading Volume with Private Valuations: Theory and Evidence from the Ex-dividend Day Theory and Evidence from the Ex-dividend Day
We develop and test a theory of the interaction between investors' heterogeneity, risk, transactions costs and trading volume. To test our model we take advantage of the specific nature of trading motives around the distribution of cash dividends namely the costly trading of tax shields. Consistent with the theory, we show that when trades occur because of differential valuation of cash flows a...

Based upon an examination of 987 ex-dividend events that took place on the Taiwan Stock Exchange between January 1992 and December 2006, we find that differential taxes are an important factor in terms of their effects on share prices and the behavior of investors around the ex-dividend day. Ex-day price drop ratio increases with the average investor’s preference for dividend relative to capita...

This study examines share price and trading volumes data around the date of cash dividend distributions made by a sample of companies listed on The London Stock Exchange. The ex-day share price behaviour is modelled to take account of the personal taxes of long-term investors as well as the transaction costs and holding risks of short-term traders. The post-announcement drift is linked to the b...
متن کاملEx-Dividend Day Returns when Dividend and Capital Gains are Taxed at the Same Rate
Due to the overwhelming international evidence that stock prices drop by less than the dividend paid on ex-dividend days, the ex-dividend day anomaly is considered a stylized fact. Two main approaches have emerged to explain this empirical regularity: the tax-clientele hypothesis and the microstructure of financial markets. Although the most widely accepted explanation for this fact relies on t...

This paper investigates the effects of capital gains and dividend taxes on excess returns around announcements of dividend increases and ex-dividend days for U.S. corporations. Consistent with standard no-arbitrage conditions, we find that the ex-dividend day premium increased from 2002 to 2004 when the dividend tax rate was cut. Consistent with the signalling theory of dividends, we also find ...
